Video Games and TV Teach To Kill - National Post

Do you agree with David Grossman? Explain why or why not.

Answer:
I agree that he has some valid points, however, there are also some that just don't make sense. I do agree that in some cases the video games or TV shows might influence some children to act violent, however, it is usually not the case. In my opinion, he sounds like he is saying that children are stupid enough to not realize that they should not act the way people do on TV or in video games. Also, comparing soldiers in training to children watching TV is unreasonable because it will not teach children to forget about their emotions and just act since children usually put their emotions first. He also said, "We're not just teaching kids to kill. We're teaching them to like it." I strongly disagree with this statement. You do kill in some video games, however, it is not teaching us how to kill, because real life killing is much more different from the killing in the video games and children are aware of that. Also, we're not teaching them to like it, it's just a way for children to release their stress from their everyday life in a fun and exciting way. In conclusion, he's mostly looking at one side of the story, the side which supports his opinions.

Question: 
Should twelve and thirteen year olds be able to play any video game they want? 

Explain why or why not.

Answer:

I think it's alright for children from ages of 12 to 13 to play any games they want as long as they know they shouldn't be doing the violent things in the games or if their parents agree to let them play the games that they chose. The reason why I think it's important for children to know that they shouldn't be doing things that appear in the game is because if they didn't know that, then as they grow older, they may find themselves doing those exact same things. If they were to do those things, then they would end up in jail and be labeled as criminals. In my opinion, that is the very future any child should avoid. Also, by asking permission to play those games from their parents, it can be assured that the parents will know what is good for their children and what is bad. However, I do not think that parents should say no to every violent game their children want to play because chances are, the children will play the game in secret or build hatred towards their parents. In that situation, the exact same thing might happen, they will do bad things. In conclusion, I think it's alright for twelve years olds and thirteen year olds to play any games they want as long as they have their parents' agreement or they are aware of the danger of video games.
